Railways stay on track

Railways hung on in a thriller against Royals at Tigerland on Saturday in the Sixteens, winning by three points to move into second behind Albany, only on percentage.

The game was tight all day, no team being able to score more than two goals in any quarter, and it was only inaccurate kicking that cost the Lions the match as the Tigers were clinical in attack, finishing with 6.0 (36) to 4.9 (33).

Jai Roberts snagged a brace for the victors, with Harrison McLeod, Hunter Porteous and Hayden Leo playing well.

Leading goalkicker Buddy Robinson (41 for the season) managed to kick two goals and be best player for Royals in a low-scoring game, with assistance from Connor Newman, Tadhg Mills and Elijah Williams.

Still on Saturday and Denmark-Walpole stride confidently towards a finals appearance, getting off to a big first quarter lead against Mount Barker at McLean Oval, and going on with the job to record a 10.17 (77) to 3.8 (26) victory.

The Magpies’ Ryan Hick was the most dangerous forward on the ground, finishing with three goals, while Luke Schober and Rhys Spencer, both with two goals, were also among the best players.

Bulls captain Jared Ballard led from the front, while Jacob Sadler, Jack Williams and Bradley Scherell got plenty of the footy.

In the final game on Sunday, top-of-the-table ladder leaders Albany flexed their muscles against North Albany at Retravision Stadium, scoring 12.14 (86) to 3.1 (19).

Son of a gun James Taylor was best-on-ground, booting five goals, with Zephyr Simmons (three) and Hudson Ramm prominent for the winners.

Kangas were best served by Dylan Bennett who has been in rare form over the past month, Tyler Simpson and Luke Pickering.

This Saturday in the penultimate round, Royals are at home to Denmark-Walpole at Retravision Stadium at 11am, Mount Barker host North Albany at Sounness Park at 11am and on Sunday, Railways clash with Albany at Tigerland at 9.10am.
